Zac Taylor: Jermaine Burton will have a good career but needs to do business the right way

There was an unexpected name on the Bengals’ inactive list for Sunday’s game against the Raiders.

Wide receiver Jermaine Burton was a healthy addition after quarterback Joe Burrow and others spent the week talking about the third-round pick being ready for a bigger role as Tee Higgins was dealing with a quadriceps injury. According to multiple reports, Burton missed the team’s walkthrough on Saturday.

Head coach Zac Taylor didn’t elaborate on why the team decided to sit out Burton, but said it was a necessary response to something that happened late in the week.

“Jermaine was an important part of the plan and there were a lot of positive things people said about him throughout the week,” Taylor said in a team transcript. “Everything was right, and then toward the end of the week we just had to get all our business done right. I can sit here and say that making him inactive was a difficult decision, but based on all the information we had, it was absolutely the right decision. He’s a guy who I think will have a really good career here and we’ll support him. He wants to help us win and do things right. Today was just a necessary step that we had to take, but we will bring him back into the team and make sure he goes on and becomes a professional. There are a lot of things to love about Jermaine, so he has his best days ahead of him and we will make sure he achieves that.”

While playing for Alabama, Burton hit on a female fan during a game at Tennessee, and former Alabama coach Nick Saban said the wideout’s “emotional maturity” was an issue he needed to work on as a professional. Taylor said during the draft that he was happy with Burton and reiterated that on Sunday, but it’s clearly a work in progress for the rookie.
