Young people volunteer at the Tulsa Zoo as part of a program

Young people who are interested in animals can volunteer at the Tulsa Zoo, giving them a closer look at the real world behind the scenes.

The happiness of these animals requires a lot of time and care.

Hannah Sanches and Aliyah Ambrosia help take care of the animals’ needs.

“I’ve wanted to do this for some time,” Hannah said. “I was looking for ways to get involved in the program because I plan to work in a similar field.”

Hannah and Aliyah have the opportunity to work in different departments as part of Zoo Teens.

The year-round program accepts 50 young people. Students can apply after eighth grade and stay with Zoo Teens until they graduate from high school.

During the program, Aliyah and Hannah will be able to work as zookeeper assistants in a variety of habitats.

They both say it was a good learning experience.

“You get to meet a lot of good friends. You get to have a great experience. It’s not just like, oh, I went to summer camp, no, I got to do this thing, I got to work with animals, I got to go behind the scenes at a zoo at some points,” Aliyah said. “It’s really cool to meet people who have similar interests.”

“Public speaking, dealing with different animals. And honestly, it’s just a nice way to meet people,” Hannah said.

While the focus is on the animals, Hannah and Aliyah will also go home fulfilled.
