Yankees vs. Guardians score, live updates: New York aims to advance to the World Series in ALCS Game 5

The New York Yankees are on the verge of reaching their first World Series since 2009, but they’ll have to overcome a Cleveland Guardians team that has shown some offensive prowess in its last two games. While Cleveland triumphed in Game 3, they couldn’t quite complete the comeback in Friday night’s loss in Game 4, leaving them vulnerable to elimination in Game 5 on Saturday in Cleveland.

LHP Carlos Rodón is on the rise for the Yankees and is looking to build on his impressive performance in Game 1, in which he pitched six innings, giving up just one run and recording nine strikeouts. For the Guardians, it’s right-hander Tanner Bibee, who has a 3.60 ERA this postseason. He pitched 1 1/3 innings in Game 2 against the Yankees, giving up two earned runs and striking out two.

Can the Yankees finish the job and avoid returning home for Game 6? We’ll find out soon enough.

Live23 updates

  • Middle 7: Yankees 2, Guardians 2

Rocchio just ended the inning with a double play for Cleveland – it was the third straight double play to end an inning – and the Guardians made it out of the seventh.

  • The Guardians pull Cade Smith with one out and one on here in the seventh. Herrin will come into the game now and try to get Cleveland out of the inning without giving up a run.

  • Ending 6: Yankees 2, Guardians 2

The Yankees managed to get out of the sixth inning with two scores after Hill came in to replace Leiter on the mound, and we’re still tied 2-2.

  • Stanton strikes again

Just like that, we are captivated. Giancarlo Stanton hit his fourth home run of the ALCS, and suddenly the score here in Cleveland is 2-2. He also started that with two outs and two strikes.

That’s enough for Bibee on Guardian Hill.

  • Yankees make moves

And here come the Yankees. Torres and Soto opened the sixth inning with two singles, and the Guardians’ coaching staff now meets with Bibee on the mound.

  • End 5: Guardians 2, Yankees 0

Thomas grounded out to second and the Yankees made it out of the inning after loading the bases.

The Guardians now have a two-run lead after halftime of this clash. If the Yankees want to move on from this and punch their ticket to the World Series, they’re going to have to do something soon.

  • Yankees draft Rodon

David Fry broke his bat hitting a double that Aaron Judge should have caught in the outfield, and the Yankees pull Rodon off the mound.

In the fifth pitch, Leiter will pitch for the Yankees with two outs and runners on second and third.

  • Guardians extend their lead

After Gimenez doubled to start the inning, Steven Kwan hit him with a perfect single to short center field. The Guardians now lead 2-0 in the fifth period and it looks like Rodon’s night is all but over.

  • Middle 5: Guardians 1, Yankees 0

The Guardians managed a very close double play, surviving a challenge from the Yankees to get out of the fourth. The Yankees had just one hit since the first inning.

  • End 4: Guardians 1, Yankees 0

Bibee threw 11 pitches to start the inning, and Rodon finished with just six pitches after Thomas, Naylor and Noel were all thrown out.

We’re down to four now, and the Yankees are still down by a run.

  • Middle 4: Guardians 1, Yankees 0

Bibee threw just 11 pitches in that inning to get out of things quickly. He’s on a roll now, and the Yankees’ first-inning offensive burst is long gone.

The Guardians held a one-run lead by the end of the fourth.

  • End 3: Guardians 1, Yankees 0

Rocchio walked to start the inning for Cleveland, but Rodon got out quickly and easily, keeping the deficit at a single run.

  • Middle 3: Guardians 1, Yankees 0

After this first inning, the Guardians are now settling in. Bibee just finished his second straight 1-2-3 inning by striking out Aaron Judge.

    Cleveland’s lead is 1.

  • After 2: Guardians 1, Yankees 0

Josh Naylor made it to third with a very soft single, and then Bo Naylor hit him with a deep double down the right field line. The Guardians strike first and take a 1-0 lead.

  • Middle 2: Yankees 0, Guardians 0

This was a much better inning for Cleveland. Bibee struck out both Volpe and Wells, and then Verdugo flew left. We’re still tied up.

  • After 1: Yankees 0, Guardians 0

That’s a quick 1-2-3 inning for Rodon, and we’re still tied 0-0 after 1 in Cleveland.

  • 94.4 mph to make the game at the plate. Incredible.

  • Center 1: Yankees 0, Guardians 0

The Yankees still loaded the bases, but Bibee got out of the inning after Anthony Rizzo singled to left for the third out. That was almost really bad, really fast for the Guardians.

  • Torres hit a single up the middle for the Yankees, and then Juan Soto nearly scored on him with a deep double that took it to the wall.

But somehow the Guardians pulled off a perfect relay to get Torres out for the first time after the home inning. What a game to keep this thing at 0-0.

  • Tanner Bibee threw out the first pitch and we are officially at Progressive Field.
