Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. accuses Royals’ Maikel Garcia of trying to hurt his teammate: ‘A sore loser’

New York Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. didn’t hold back when talking about the Kansas City Royals’ Maikel Garcia sliding to second base during the Yankees’ decisive 3-1 win on Thursday.

After Garcia led off the sixth inning with a single, the Royals’ Michael Massey hit a chopper to first base. Yankees first baseman Jon Berti stepped on the bag and fired to shortstop Anthony Volpe, who tagged out Garcia at second base for a double play.

Garcia slid hard into second base and Volpe tagged Garcia with some force. Volpe hit Garcia around the neck with his right forearm during the slide.

Garcia and Volpe stood up and looked at each other for a moment. Then, as Garcia slowly walked off the field, he turned to Chisholm and began talking to the Yankees third baseman.

As soon as that happened, chaos ensued as teams streamed out of their dugouts and bullpens stormed in from the outfield. Chisholm was restrained by several people in the Yankees dugout.

After a few tense moments, order was quickly restored and play continued. Chisholm was upset because he felt Garcia was trying to hurt Volpe on the slide.

“I just felt like he was trying to hurt Volpe because he was a sore loser. Do you know what i mean? He talked a lot on Instagram and Twitter and stuff. I do the same thing, but I don’t.” “I’ll hurt someone if they win a game. I told him we’re not going to do that on this side and I’m going to stand up for my guys,” Chisholm said.

Even before the benches were cleared, Chisholm was loudly booed by Royals fans because he said the Royals were “lucky” to win Game 2. During the Yankees’ postgame celebration, he was jokingly booed by Chisholm’s teammates.

Gerrit Cole was on the mound when the benches cleared and had to be restrained during the altercation.

“I held my feelings in all night,” Cole admitted, “and let them out on the way to the dugout.”

Cole pitched seven innings of one-run ball. Yankees manager Aaron Boone wasn’t even sure what was happening at second base, which led to the benches becoming vacant.

“I have no idea (what happened). Honestly,” Boone said. “It was like we were out there and then it was right back, we were at the end of a playoff game. So I haven’t even allowed the dust to settle and I’m talking to the guys that are involved.”

“Yeah, it was like there was some kind of excitement about the foil or whatever. We’ll just go back and show a little Hal McRae and Willie Randolph and we’ll all laugh at ourselves,” Boone jokingly added, referring to the days of intense Royals-Yankees rivalry.

Royals manager Matt Quatraro was matter-of-fact about what happened.

“Volpe had the ball and blocked the sack. “It probably wasn’t that important to Maikel and it got a little uneasy,” said Quatraro.

The Yankees now await their opponent for Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Monday.

The Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers play a winner-take-all Game 5 on Saturday.
