Xcel Energy: Possible power outages during severe weather

Xcel Energy is monitoring severe weather with strong winds and dry conditions in Mesa and Garfield counties for the remainder of this week, with an increased risk of wildfires peaking Thursday afternoon and evening, according to a press release from Xcel.

According to the National Weather Service, a wildfire warning is in effect from Thursday noon to 8 p.m. for much of Garfield County, Mesa County and parts of Utah. Sustained winds in the range of 24-40 km/h are expected, with gusts of up to 72 km/h possible.

Based on the data and weather forecasts the company receives, Xcel Energy believes that some customers may experience power outages due to the high winds. If that happens, plans are being made in advance to safely restore power.

Xcel Energy also uses Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS) that help reduce wildfires. When these settings are enabled, power lines are more sensitive and can immediately stop the flow of power if a problem is detected, such as a tree branch touching the line.

The company does not proactively shut off power to its customers, but if there is a problem with the line, it may be shut off. Power will remain off until crews can visually inspect the power lines to make sure they can safely turn it back on.

These settings are intended to improve public safety in the event of a possible wildfire, the company’s press release said. However, it also means that power outages, if they occur, are likely to last hours or even days longer than usual outages.

Xcel Energy will deploy teams to respond as quickly as possible once the high-risk period has passed.

As a last resort to protect and prevent wildfires, Xcel Energy may initiate a Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) if conditions warrant. The Company does not believe conditions warrant this action at this time, but should weather conditions worsen, the Company will communicate whether a PSPS is necessary.
