Xavier Worthy gives mother Nicky the touchdown ball on her birthday, ESPN highlights the touching story

Xavier Worthy gave his mother a birthday present in front of millions of NFL fans on Monday.

In the fourth quarter of the Monday Night Football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the New Orleans Saints in Week 5, the speedy rookie scored on a three-yard handoff from the tight end Travis Kelce. Without hesitation, he ran to his mother, Nicky Jones, in the front row to give her the game ball for her birthday.

ESPN’s Lisa Salters had a spotlight story for just this moment.

“Xavier Worthy says his mother Nicky is his best friend. He says she had him when she was 18; So she’s really like his sister,” Salters said during the MNF broadcast. “He said, ‘Our relationship is really close. She meant the world to me. She was just there for me every step of the way. We have this special bond. Talk all the time.’

“He was so happy that she was going to be at the game tonight because it was her birthday. The only thing he told me, Joe (Buck), is how great it is now to take care of mom just because of football.”

Worthy made the most of his NFL opportunities during his rookie season. Through five games, the Texas Product has four touchdowns to his credit – two on the ground and two through the air. As a regular member of the Chiefs lineup, he totaled six carries for 42 yards while having 15 receptions for 154 yards through the air.

It’s a continuation of what the all-rounder was able to accomplish at the college level. During his three seasons with the Longhorns, he accounted for over 2,700 receiving yards and caught 26 touchdown passes. He will look to continue those efforts while also caring for his mother as he advances his NFL career.
