WWU student dies after apparent fall in Nash Hall

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – First responders were dispatched to the Nash Hall residence hall on the Western Washington University campus at approximately 10:40 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9, for a report of a deceased person. According to emergency services radio broadcasts at the time, one person was located and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was started, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

WWU officials issued the following statement today, October 10th.

The University is deeply saddened to confirm the death of a student last night following an apparent fall from Nash Hall, an on-campus residence hall. Emergency services were called around 10:30 p.m., arrived on scene and provided medical assistance. Law enforcement authorities are currently investigating the case. They have stated that there is no evidence of wrongdoing and that there is no danger to the public. The student’s family has been notified and is receiving support from the university and emergency personnel.

WWU President Sabah Randhawa said: “It breaks my heart to learn that we have lost one of our students. On behalf of the WWU community, our thoughts are with the students’ families, friends and classmates. We understand that this message is difficult to understand and we encourage anyone who needs support to take advantage of the resources provided by the University.”

Student affairs professionals and advisors are ready to provide support and resources to resident advisors and other students as needed. Students and community members who are struggling are encouraged to seek help.

The WWU Counseling and Wellness Center is available to assist any student affected by this incident. Students may contact the office at 360-650-3164 for assistance. Employees can access the Employee Assistance Program at 877-313-4455. Both numbers are available 24 hours a day.
