WWU police are sent to the student dormitory, WWU rector is arrested

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University (WWU) officials issued a statement Tuesday morning, October 15th, saying that WWU’s Dean of Libraries has been placed on administrative leave after resigning on Monday, October 14th. October, was arrested in front of a student dormitory.

Yesterday at 4:51 p.m., University Police officers were called to respond to suspicious activity outside Haggard Hall. Upon arriving at the scene, UPD officers interviewed the two individuals, both adult males. After further review of the situation and consultation with colleagues from the Bellingham Police Department, UPD officers arrested one of the individuals, identified in the police report as John Danneker, who is employed by WWU as Dean of Libraries, on charges of “communication with one.” “Minor for immoral reasons,” a gross misdemeanor in Washington state. The second person was the reporting party and has no connection to Western Washington University.

Danneker was removed as dean of libraries. He will be placed on leave pending the completion of the university’s investigation, which will be conducted in collaboration with local law enforcement.

Whatcom County Jail records show Danneker, 48, was arrested by Bellingham police on Monday just after 7 p.m. On Tuesday, records show he was charged with gross misdemeanor and one felony count of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes.

Whatcom County Superior Court records show Danneker is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
