RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team learned Friday that it was picked ninth in the Southland Conference (SLC) preseason poll by the SLC head coaches and sports information directors.


UTRGV received 67 points in the poll, ahead of Incarnate Word and Nicholls, which finished 10th.^th and 11^threspectively.


Lamar received 20 first-place votes and was named the poll’s favorite with 200 points. Texas A&M-Commerce received two first-place votes and was voted second in the poll with 177 points. McNeese was voted third with 147 points, while Northwestern State was voted fourth with 130 points.


Texas A&M-Corpus Christi finished fifth with 112 points. Southeastern finished sixth with 105 points. Stephen F. Austin finished seventh with 98 points and Houston Christian finished eighth with 81 points.


The Vaqueros have an exhibition match against the University of Houston at 11 a.m. Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex before opening the regular season against Texas Southern at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
