Women’s soccer stays on the streets in Akron

DAYTON – The Wright State women’s soccer team will continue to open the 2024 season with away games, traveling to the University of Akron on Sunday, Aug. 25. The game is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium in Akron, Ohio. Fans can follow the action via the ESPN+ live stream or live stats.

LAST TIME
Wright State is currently 0-1 on the season and lost 6-0 to Illinois in its season opener on Thursday, August 15. The Raiders finished the night with six shots, including three on goal, led by Ainsley Teradas two shots on goal, a career high, followed by Ruby Dunlevy with a shot on goal. Goalkeeper Kiera Sarka recorded seven saves.

Akron had a 3-14-1 overall record in 2023 and finished 1-9-1 in the MAC. The Zips are currently 2-0-1 this season, defeating Iona 2-1 in their season opener, drawing 1-1 with Eastern Illinois and recently defeating Oakland 1-0.

HISTORY AGAINST AKRON
This will be the fourth time the two teams have met, as the Raiders hold an all-time series record of 2-1-0 against the Zips. The two last faced each other in September 2023, when the Raiders won 2-1.

TALENTS OF THE WHOLE CONFERENCE
Wright State returns with All-Horizon League selection Kaitlyn Eyink. Eyink was named to the All-Freshman team last season after appearing in all 18 games for the Raiders, including 16 starts. She finished second on the team in appearances, behind only goaltender Kiera Sarka in minutes played (1,357) and complete games (5). The Findlayer, Ohio native anchored Wright State’s defense that posted seven shutouts, the program’s highest mark since 2017. She helped opponents score one or fewer goals in 10 of WSU’s 18 games.

MEET THE TRAINERS
The Raiders are led by fourth-year head coach Travis. Sobers was a longtime assistant coach at WSU before taking the reins on the sidelines three summers ago. The former Wright State football standout led the Raiders to a 6-7-5 overall record and a 4-3-3 record in conference play last year. Second-year assistant coach Krystle Seidel joined the team in May 2023 after serving as head coach for four years at Macalester College and nine seasons at the University of Minnesota.

PRE-SEASON SURVEY
The Raiders were picked to finish fourth with 71 points in the Horizon League preseason poll, voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches. Defending champion Milwaukee topped the poll, with IU Indianapolis coming in second.

NEW TEAM
WSU welcomes 12 newcomers, nine freshmen and three transfer players, to this season’s roster. The Raiders’ 35-man roster includes eight returning sophomores, eight third-year students, five fourth-year students and two fifth-year student-athletes. Of the three transfer players, two are sophomores and one is a third-year student-athlete.

OHIO STRONG
Wright State’s 2024 roster includes 22 players from Ohio. Four Raiders — Addy Canter, Elise Canter, Heidi OrloffAnd Ashley Vaughn — came to WSU from nearby Beavercreek High School. Two other people — Annika Samborski And Olivia Mace — prepared at Centerville High School.
