Women’s Institute shrinks for Hornby’s 70th anniversary

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Kent-based company Hornby, members of the Women’s Institute are being scaled down to miniature models.

The model railway manufacturer is exhibiting miniature versions of local landmarks and people at Margate railway station to celebrate the anniversary of the company’s headquarters in the town.

Seven of the 70 members of the Margate Women’s Institute (WI) will be included in the model, along with hundreds of others.

Hilary Askew, President of Margate WI, said it was “really quite nice” to have the ladies’ 2-3cm models “all standing together in front of the modelling station and campaigning”.

Margate WI is part of a national movement that brings together women, often working to make a difference in their local communities.

Mandy Jarvis, a member of Margate WI, said the group, along with Hornby, sees itself as part of the Margate community.

Models include one member holding a quilt the group made for a hospital neonatal unit and another wearing her vest and trash-picking equipment.

The group will be seen in the new cityscape next to Dreamland, the clock tower and the train station as trains run on the tracks.

Hornby celebrates its 70th anniversary in the city by outshining local legends and landmarks.
