Japan wins team title ahead of USA

Japan officially secured the team title after the sixth day of Olympic wrestling and has six guaranteed medals. Japan had a “slow” start with bronze medals in the 50kg and 68kg classes, but has not lost a fight since Yui Susaki’s surprise loss to Vinesh Phogat on the second day of competition. In that time, they have won gold medals in the 53kg, 57kg and 62kg classes and have another finalist in the 76kg class.

Team USA secured second place with four medals – Kennedy Blades in the final, gold medals from Sarah Hildebrandt (50 kg), Amit Elor (68 kg) and bronze medals from Helen Maroulis. Team USA may not be able to catch Japan, but these Games were an incredible performance from the Stars and Stripes.

Team points are calculated according to the UWW’s top 10 placing points for the team score in World Championship matches: 25, 20, 15, 15, 10, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2. At this time, only wrestlers who have reached the semifinals and finals in the 68 kg class have earned team points.
