Women’s football starts its 2024 season against Richmond

CONWAY, SC – The Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team will begin the 2024 regular season on August 15 at 7:00 p.m. ET against the Richmond Spiders at the new CCU Soccer Stadium.

Singing conversation

  • The Chants will look to improve on their overall record of 3-12-2 and their Sun Belt record of 0-8-2 in 2023.
  • Coastal welcomes volunteer assistant coach Paul Saliba to the 2024 coaching staff. Saliba has 15 years of coaching experience and was a member of Drexel’s Hall of Fame-inducted football team that set the record for most wins in a season (13) in 1998.
  • This is the first of nine home games that will take place at the new CCU Soccer Complex.
  • CCU has posted a record of 10-11-2 in season opening games since the program was introduced in 2000.
  • In 2023, nine of CCU’s 17 games were one-goal games, of which CCU won two.
  • The Chants have seven international players on their roster and welcome student-athletes from England, Australia, Spain, Germany, Norway and New Zealand.

Scouting out the enemy

  • Richmond had an overall record of 3-11-4 and was 1-8-1 in A-10 conference play.
  • The Spiders have added nine freshmen and one graduate student to their 2024 roster.
  • Richmond has lost its two top scorers but will return Emma Shields and Casey Merz, who each scored a goal this year.
  • Regular goalkeeper Taylor Montague will return between the posts. The fifth-year senior recorded a .798 save percentage and saved 75 shots in the 2023 season.

History against

  • CCU has a record of 0-2-1 against Richmond.
  • The first meeting took place in 2009, when CCU suffered a 0-3 defeat.
  • The Chanticleers fought to a 3-3 tie in the second overtime against the Spiders in their only game in Conway, SC.
  • Richmond won its last encounter with the Chants 2-0 in September 2021.
