Women’s football battles against Lady Pirates on the street

WASHINGTON (August 17, 2024) – The Howard University women’s soccer team travels to Norfolk, Virginia, for its first away game of the season, facing rival Hampton. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.

GAME PREVIEW

HOWARD

On Thursday (August 15), Howard opened the season with a 4-2 win over Saint Peter’s at Greene Stadium.

HU enters the 2024 season with the goal of competing for the Northeast Conference (NEC) title.


The squad features a great mix of experienced veterans and young players, led by the senior forward who was selected to the All-NEC First Team. Mela Earley (La Mirada, California), second-year midfielder Samantha James (Herndon, Va.) and reigning NEC Goalie of the Year in his second year Trinity Knox (Atlanta).


The Bisons are expected to finish third in the preseason, led by longtime head coach Brent Leibawho is entering his 15th year.



HAMPTON


On opening night (August 15), Hampton (0-1) lost 4-0 away at Mount St. Mary’s. In that setback, the team had to take nine shots, including seven after halftime.


At the beginning of the season, head coach Scot Vorwold signed 13 new players. The young club is expected to have 13th in the CAA (Coastal Athletic Association).



LAST TIMEOUT


On August 15, Howard started the season on a high note, defeating the Saint Peter’s Peacocks 4-2 in the opening game Thursday night at Greene Stadium.


Second striker Mimi Richards (Silver Spring, Maryland) took a two-goal lead.


Newbie Hailey Ayers (Lorton, Va.) found her footing in goal, stopping three shots in the second half while stopping six shots on goal.



Next appointment


On Thursday (August 22), the Bison return to Greene Stadium to host George Mason in a non-conference showdown on international night, kicking off at 7 p.m.
