Siblings usually have a bittersweet relationship with each other. They may not shy away from fighting, but at the same time, they are expected to love each other and support each other’s preferences and life choices. However, one sister didn’t fully accept her younger sister’s sexuality, and her 49-year-old mother, u/Worldly-Surprise6288, was torn between her feuding daughters. She shared her story on Reddit, expressing that she didn’t want to attend her older daughter’s wedding because of her behavior.

The mom’s two daughters, Tracy, 23, and Caitlin, 17, weren’t very close growing up, but when Caitlin came out as bisexual at 13, the dynamic between the sisters changed completely. People around Caitlin quickly accepted her, but Tracy wasn’t too happy. Caitlin also started dating a girl in her class, and Tracy got engaged to a boy at 21. “Tracy always dreamed of the perfect wedding that was happening in two weeks. After we made last-minute changes and went over the plans, she showed me the seating chart. I noticed that Caitlin wasn’t on the plan. I asked her about it and she said she didn’t invite her because she was afraid of making the family look bad in front of her fiancé’s family,” the mom wrote.

The mother was surprised by Tracy’s behavior, which revealed that she did not want her in-laws to know about Caitlin’s “lifestyle.” Tracy ended the conversation with her mother by sticking to her decision and not inviting Caitlin. “I had so much more to say about the matter, but without hesitation, I said, ‘If your sister is not invited, you should give my spot to someone else because I’m not coming.’ I grabbed my things and left. As I walked out the door, all I heard was my daughter crying and begging me to come to the wedding because she needed her mommy there,” the mother explained, adding that she then began planning a getaway with Caitlin and her friend instead of going to the wedding.

Caitlin was upset when she found out, and when the mom spoke to Tracy about it, Tracy said it was her “fiancé’s idea and she went along with it.” The mom eventually turned to the Reddit community for some sensible advice on this complex matter. u/Active-Tie4893 noted, “You’re a good mom and Tracy is the hypocrite for doing this to her only sister just to save face. If her future in-laws have a problem with her sister and partner and she’s marrying into this family anyway, then she doesn’t deserve you or her sister. It takes a brave person to come out, especially considering how sick the world is right now. But don’t let her make you change your mind if she wouldn’t invite her sister and partner.”

I’ve seen many people support their family members despite gambling, drug abuse, infidelity, criminal charges, etc. and yet kick out the gay or trans kid at the slightest thing.” u/kek2015 added, “I commend you for standing behind your daughter. The mother decided to give an update and revealed how the wedding festivities went. The mother ended up attending the wedding with her younger daughter in tow and her son-in-law’s parents also complimented Caitlin on her outfit. Tracy wanted her mother to come with her to continue the wedding festivities but she declined. She decided to go home with Caitlin as the older sister was giving her dirty looks. She hopes to sit down and talk with Tracy and will wait and see what becomes of the future of their mother-daughter bond.
