Woman disinvited from wedding abroad after spending over £1,000 on flights

A woman has revealed she was disinvited from a wedding abroad after spending thousands on travel and accommodation.

Attending a wedding can be expensive even under the best conditions, but attending a wedding abroad can often cost hundreds… if not, Thousands.

So you can imagine how disappointed one woman was when she was turned away after already spending over $1,000 (£756).

“My friend from college told me about her wedding almost a year ago and then sent me and our college friends save-the-date cards to her wedding in Asia. We’re in North America,” the woman explained on Reddit.

“I already booked my ticket. Today the group gets a message saying, ‘Hey guys, I’m so sorry to tell you this, but I don’t have any accommodation available for you for the wedding. I’m really sorry, I hope you haven’t booked tickets yet.’ That’s all.

“I spent over $1,000 on tickets. I sent her a private message and said, ‘Hey, I only booked my tickets and everything three days ago because our agent knew and found something (I think the rest didn’t, no idea). I’m going to try to cancel, but I don’t think I can.

“I understand that space was limited for the family and all that, so it’s fine, don’t worry.”

The woman said her friend responded and asked her to let her know if she couldn’t cancel.

“She said the hotel staff doesn’t give in on accommodations or anything like that,” she added. “I can probably cancel and get a partial refund.”

“Or I can attend and feel like the invitation is mandatory because I wasn’t invited. If I attend, my friends would feel terrible because I got to go and they didn’t.”

The woman explained that she was “embarrassed” after she had already told people that she would participate.

After being asked for advice, other Reddit users shared their thoughts, with many horrified that the bride had rescinded the invitations.

One wrote: “This makes me think she invited way more people than she could accommodate and didn’t think that so many people would actually show up for her overseas wedding.”

And another said: “Can’t you just stay somewhere else? This is so weird.”

And a third suggested: “I would try to speak to her on the phone and understand the situation better. It is common for overseas weddings to have some guests on site (such as immediate family and the bridal party) while others stay off site and still attend the on-site event.”

Others suggested that she could use the tickets for her own short vacation.

How would you deal with this situation?
