Woman books flights and hotel for wedding abroad, but the couple is already married

(WJW) – A woman is expressing her disappointment and anger after spending “quite a bit of money” to attend her niece’s wedding, but finding out too late that the bride and groom were already married.

The Reddit user posted a statement about the situation on August 1 in the subreddit “r/weddingshaming.”

Tornadoes in Northeast Ohio: See the path of the storms

“My husband’s niece, who I will call ‘Jennifer,’ announced her engagement about 14 months before the wedding. It was to be a venue wedding and guests were advised to make all reservations early as local hotels, etc. would book up quickly. So we went ahead and reserved our hotel room, purchased plane tickets, etc.,” the post said.

According to the Reddit user, they received a wedding save-the-date card about seven months prior. The card even reminded guests to book all amenities annually, which the user said they had already done.

This is where the story took a turn.

Just a month before the planned wedding, the bride’s father contacted the Reddit user.

New estimates: Here’s when power could be restored

“The bride’s father VERY casually mentioned that Jennifer had gotten married the previous weekend, albeit at a new venue and with a very small number of guests,” the user said. “Up until that point, we had never been informed of any new developments or changes to the original plans! No map, no email, NOTHING! And because we only learned the news after the fact, it was too late to cancel our reservations and/or change our flight.”

The Reddit poster said they “lost quite a bit of money” because plans changed at such short notice and they weren’t gone.

The user expressed sympathy and understanding for the couple, saying, “The thing is, I understand that life goes on and plans sometimes change. In this case, Jennifer and her boyfriend actually had a valid reason (it’s a long story) for what they did. But I DO NOT understand why we were not informed of the change in plans before the actual new wedding! I think even if we and the other uninvited people had been informed via mass email, it would have been better than having no communication at all. A breach of etiquette, inconsiderate, and yes, in poor taste!”

Many commenters on the Reddit post agree that this is a dire situation, but wonder what could have caused the couple to change their wedding plans in the first place.
