A woman recently took to Reddit to criticize her husband’s niece for being “inconsiderate” and “tasteless” after she organized a wedding abroad and then got married a month early without telling guests. In a post shared on the r/weddingshaming subreddit, the user detailed her frustration with her niece’s lack of communication surrounding the last-minute decision. According to the post, titled “You’re invited to our wedding! Never mind,” the niece announced her engagement 14 months before the wedding date.

The Reddit user shared that her husband’s niece, Jennifer, and her fiancé asked guests to make reservations early to secure spots at the hotel and event, and the user complied with their request. Seven months later, the couple “reiterated the importance of booking everything as soon as possible.” However, about a month before the wedding was scheduled, she was shocked when the bride’s father mentioned that Jennifer had gotten married the previous weekend, “albeit at a new venue and with a very reduced number of guests,” she wrote.

This information was of course shocking for the woman, as she had made reservations months earlier at the couple’s request. “Up until this point, we had never been informed of any new developments or changes to the original plans!” the post said. “No card, no email, NOTHING! And because we only found out the news after the fact, it was too late to cancel our reservations and/or change our flight. As a result, we were out quite a bit of money!” the woman said.

Additionally, in the post, the woman expressed her sympathy for the couple and acknowledged that the circumstances may have been beyond their control, but she reiterated her frustration with the way the couple communicated with their guests.

“The thing is, I understand that life goes on and plans sometimes change. In this case, Jennifer and her boyfriend actually had a valid reason (it’s a long story) for what they did. But I do NOT understand why we weren’t told about the change in plans before the actual wedding!” she wrote.

“I think even if we and the other disinvited people had been informed via mass email, it would have been better than no communication at all,” the post concluded. “Breach of etiquette, inconsiderate and yes, tasteless!”

In the comments section, the Reddit user also clarified that the ceremony was not just a precursor to the original ceremony, but the only wedding. The couple’s “stripped down wedding was all they had,” she wrote. “They had completely canceled the original destination wedding… they just couldn’t be bothered to let most of us know!” she said.

In the comments section, some users expressed their sympathy for the Redditor, while others shared their own experiences. “Yeeeeeah, what would have happened if you hadn’t met her dad? Or if he hadn’t mentioned it? I wonder if there are still guests who want to go and have no idea the wedding is now canceled,” one user wrote.

“Since the trip is non-refundable, just go on vacation. It’ll probably be more fun without the wedding nonsense,” another commented. “This is absurd. They should compensate their guests. I can’t imagine doing something so incredibly rude and selfish,” a third Reddit user commented.
