Winter storm warning, snow in the mountains, rain in Denver

More than a foot of heavy snow is expected to fall on Telluride and other towns around Colorado’s San Juan Mountains this weekend, making travel dangerous, according to the National Weather Service.

The agency issued a winter storm warning early Friday morning covering the northwest and southwest of the San Juan Mountains, including the cities of Telluride, Ouray, Lake City, Silverton, Rico and Hesperus.

“Roads, and particularly bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and dangerous,” the warning said, noting that conditions could continue until midday Sunday. “Traveling could be very difficult, if not impossible.”

At these higher elevations, wind gusts of up to 45 mph could occur, and up to 3 feet of snow could fall on certain mountain peaks.

While warm weather has delayed snowfall across the state, a dangerous weather forecast for northeastern and north-central Colorado suggests between 1 and 3 inches of snow could settle in areas above 9,000 feet by Friday night.

The Denver metro area and across the Plains will also see rain on Friday. NWS forecasters say the rain in Denver will likely begin after 5 p.m. and continue Saturday. Thunderstorms are possible on Friday night.

Temperatures in Denver are unlikely to rise above 60 degrees on Friday, with an overnight low of 38 degrees and winds of 7 to 15 mph and gusts up to 24 mph.
