Will the new TV adaptation of “Dorian Gray” be de-sexed? That’s why fans believe that

A new television adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s highly acclaimed queer novel from 1890 The Picture of Dorian Gray comes to television – with a significant change from the original story.

Accordingly DeadlineBerlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, the team behind the LGBTQ+ series Fellow travelersadapted the book into a television series entitled The Greys“In a twist on the Gothic novel, the series revolves around siblings Basil and Doran Gray,” they note.

In the original story, first published in 1890 by popular queer author Oscar Wilde, Basil’s homoerotic obsession with Dorian leads him to paint the young man. During the séance, Dorian meets Basil’s friend Lord Henry, who stresses that fulfillment can only be found in beauty and sex. Suddenly realizing the power of his beauty—and that it will eventually fade—Dorian wishes for the portrait to age instead of him. His wish is granted, and as the portrait absorbs all of Dorian’s transgressions over the years, he remains beautiful while his sins become more and more destructive.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is cautious in its depiction of same-sex attraction, following the outrage among Victorian readers at the time. The story we know today was censored and republished to remove Basil’s declaration of love for Dorian.

The novel has been adapted many times over the years for various stage plays, television specials and films, including a 2009 dark fantasy film starring Ben Barnes.

With the news that Basil and Dorian are siblings, fans of the book are nervous that the upcoming series might de-gay Wilde’s original story even further. With not much information available yet, we’ll just have to wait and see…

The Greys is currently in development at Netflix. No production or premiere dates have been announced.
