Will Nelly Korda play the 2024 FM Championship after nearly losing on the Old Course?

Last weekend was a rollercoaster of emotions for Nelly Korda! She became the third player to win the 2024 Rolex ANNIKA Major Award after finishing in the top 10 at a major championship for the 12th time in her career. Before her, only Michelle Wie West (2014) and Lilia Vu (2023) have won it. However, the AIG Women’s Open trophy slipped away from her by just a few points.

The No. 1 Rolex player shot a round of par on Sunday to finish at 5 under par, tying her for second place with Running Yin, Lilia Vu and Jiyai Shin. She was just two shots behind Lydia Ko, which derailed her attempt at another major victory, and things couldn’t have been worse for her. But the question is where will she play next after the heartbreak in Massachusetts?

After the conclusion of the last major of the season, the LPGA Tour returns to the USA for the inaugural FM Championship in Boston. It is scheduled to begin on August 29th and all LPGA players are training at full speed to win the first title of the event.

However, the LPGA Tour’s official website published the full 144-player field and did not mention Nelly Korda. Although no obvious reasons were given, it seems that the 26-year-old wanted to win the Solheim Cup this year.

The biennial golf tournament takes place in Europe in two weeks. She is one of nine players who automatically qualified for the event and will play for the US team led by Stacy Lewis.

“To win on so many different golf courses, in different weather and under so many different conditions when the pressure is on is a testament to what a great athlete and competitor she is,” Lewis said excitedly that Korda’s place on the team was filled so early. There’s no doubt that she was indeed impressed, even considering her performance at the Solheim Cup the last time she competed there.

Team Europe won the Solheim Cup in 2019 and 2021, but the last edition featured a strong Nelly Korda. Although the USA lost the Cup, Korda won both of her foursome matches with Allisen Corpuz at Finca Cortesin. However, she lost the fourball match in which she played with Ally Ewing and was defeated by Carlotta Chanda in the final singles matches.

Still, Nelly Korda has an impressive 7-4-1 record in her last three Solheim Cup appearances for Team USA. She has also earned a total of 7.5 points for the team, making her an asset. Do you think taking time off the course and playing in the Solheim Cup will help her return in better shape? Let us know in the comments section below!
