Widespread frost and freeze through Wednesday morning

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The warm pattern has officially broken this weekend… High temperatures on Sunday only reached the low 60s and upper 50s and the coolest air of the season sets in over the next three mornings. We have declared Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday six initial weather alert days due to the risk of widespread frost and freeze.

Plan to harvest in your gardens this weekend before fear of cold weather. Exposed pipes and underground plumbing should be fine, so don’t be in a rush to blow out sprinkler lines until temperatures consistently drop into the upper 20s for several hours in the morning.

This is about on track for a first freeze in the Omaha Metro… Eppley experienced its first freeze of the season on October 7th, but most of the metro did not. The average first frost for Omaha is October 6th. The first frost usually occurs on October 14th.

There were initial concerns about widespread frost on Tuesday, but clouds overnight are likely to keep morning lows a little too warm. We still see the risk of a frost. The risk of widespread frost will be higher by Wednesday morning and most will already be experiencing their first frost by this time.

We’ll warm back up from here… The start of the work week keeps highs in the low 60s to upper 50s… Thursday we’ll be back in the 70s with a welcome chance of rain Friday night Saturday.
