‘Wicked’ star Cynthia Erivo slams a fan-edited poster that obscures her eyes

Cynthia Erivo, who won two Grammys and a Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway revival of “The Color Purple,” is speaking out against a fan-made poster for “Wicked,” in which she stars opposite Ariana Great.

In the original poster for the film – in which Erivo plays Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West, for the stage musical’s adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel – she is seen wearing a witch’s hat and green face, staring straight ahead as Grande’s character Galinda Upland does to her whispers in your ear. But in the fan-edited poster, her hat is pulled much further down, completely obscuring her eyes, which she has significant problems with. Especially since no changes were made to her co-star’s likeness in the fan version.

“This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have ever seen. It’s tantamount to the horrible ai (sic) of us arguing and people asking the question, ‘Is your damn green,'” Erivo wrote in a post on Instagram. “None of this is funny. None of it is sweet. It humiliates me. It demeans us.”

She goes on to point out that the original poster “wasn’t even based on real actors, it was always just an illustration,” as The Wrap points out, adding, “I’m a real person who chose to look straight down .” the movement of the camera for you, the viewer. . . because without words we communicate with our eyes. Our poster is a homage and not an imitation. To edit my face and hide my eyes is to erase me. And that’s just deeply hurtful.” The publication adds that Grande has not publicly addressed the viral poster.
