Why this truck is now the first choice for Indiana residents

When buying a truck, there are all sorts of makes and models to choose from, but this one seems to be the favorite in Indiana.

I’ll start by saying that I’ve never been loyal to any particular brand. Over the years, I’ve driven vehicles from General Motors, Chrysler, Ford, and Toyota. Currently, my daily driver is a 2019 Ram 1500 Big Horn. This is my second Ram, and it’s my personal favorite truck so far. However, I’ve also driven Fords and Chevys, which I’ve really enjoyed, so it’s quite possible that one of those could be my next car. Anyway, the people of Indiana have spoken, and it seems we now know which truck the people of Indiana like best.

The “Big Three”: The most popular trucks in the USA

The No. 1 truck in Indiana is, not surprisingly, a member of the “big three” of Ford, Chevrolet and Ram (Chrysler). According to Hedges & Company, Ford sold the most full-size pickups in 2023, selling about 748,000 new units, up about 21% from 2022. Chevrolet was just behind Ford, up 4% from 2022, selling 553,000 new units. Ram sales actually fell about 22% in 2023, with the last of the big three selling just 444,000 full-size pickups that year.

Ford F-Series trucks are not only the most popular trucks in the country, but also the most popular vehicles overall. Over the last 40 years, Ford has sold the most units of any automaker. Although Ford trucks remain the best-selling truck class, they are not actually the first choice for Indiana residents.

According to JD Power, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is the most popular truck in Indiana. The website notes that the Silverado is known for its durability and reliability, which is important for those who need a vehicle that can withstand tough conditions for long periods of time. Additionally, JD Power points out that many Silverados are built at General Motors’ Fort Wayne Assembly Plant in northeast Indiana. This could add some local pride in the vehicle and make it more readily available to buyers in the area.

Although I see a lot of Ford F-150s on Indiana highways, I definitely see more Silverados, many of which are probably close to 20 years old by now. Even Indy Auto Man agreed that the Chevy Silverado 1500 is the best-selling car in Indiana despite Ford’s national sales record. That said, I still love my Ram and I’m sure many still like their Fords. (I know you Toyota people are just rolling your eyes at this point.)
