Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding anniversary was on April 29th, and to celebrate the occasion, the royal couple posted a previously unpublished wedding portrait on Instagram – with the simple caption “13 years ago today!”

Traditionally, the couple posts on their anniversary – and often uses a recent photo or video. Example? This sweet picture from 2023:

This year, however, her decision to dig into the archives was significant.

“It is interesting that they have apparently decided not to publish a recent photo of themselves,” says royal expert Christopher Andersen Us weekly. “Given that the world knows what they are going through right now, their smiles for the camera may seem fake.”

Kate is currently undergoing preventative chemotherapy after being recently diagnosed with cancer and is therefore taking time off from her royal duties – she announced the news in an emotional video on March 22.

On the choice of this year’s anniversary photo, Anderson says: “William and Kate are always keen to release a photo or video in public, and the never-before-seen portrait of them on their wedding day has a special meaning this year.”

He adds: “When they exchanged their wedding vows, William wore the red uniform of the Colonel-in-Chief of the Irish Guards. In the recently released black and white photo, William is wearing the blue uniform of the Blues and Royals – a nod and a wink to the fact that the Princess of Wales now has the right to wear the red uniform, as King Charles recently stripped William of the rank of Colonel-in-Chief of the Irish Guards and awarded it to Kate.”
