Why didn’t Shane Steichen call a timeout on the Jaguars’ game-winning drive?

JACKSONVILLE – The Colts actually had a plan to use the timeouts they had on the board while the Jaguars were driving toward a game-winning field goal.

It didn’t turn out the way they had hoped.

Indianapolis had to call two timeouts as Jacksonville pulled away in the final two minutes of a tied game, with Cameron Little hitting the game-winning 49-yard field goal. The ball sailed through the uprights with 21 seconds left, giving Joe Flacco and the Colts offense little time to respond, resulting in a 37-34 loss.

“We wanted to do it as soon as they got into that area — as soon as they got to about the 40-, 45-yard line,” Colts coach Shane Steichen said. “That was probably about the range we wanted to use them.”

He was referring to the Colts’ 40 or 45 yard line, where the Jaguars would be just a few plays away from scoring a game-winning field goal.

The Jaguars ran three plays to get within that range – a 9-yard pass to Johnson, a 5-yard run by Tank Bigsby and an 11-yard pass to Luke Farrell. But those three plays dropped the clock from 2:40 to just 35 seconds. The Colts didn’t call a timeout until there were 27 seconds left.

In the end, the Colts got the ball back with 17 seconds left in the game before Flacco was sacked by Travon Walker and the Colts lost to the Jaguars on the road for the 10th straight season.
