Why Chappell Roan told MTV VMAs attendees to “Shut the fuck up”

MTV VMAs 2024: Chappell Roan tells the crowd on the red carpet: “Shut up!”

Chappell Roan was excited to be at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards – but not in the way you’d think.

Before the “Good Luck, Babe!” singer took the stage at New York’s UBS Arena on September 11, a heated argument broke out on the red carpet. (Click here to see all the celebrity guests.)

According to video footage circulating on social media, Chappell was adjusting her Y/Project dress with her back to photographers when she heard someone in the crowd shout, “Shut the fuck up!”

The 26-year-old quickly turned around and shouted back: “You shut up!”

After several cheers from the audience, Chappell continued to quell the heckler. She wagged her finger and added sternly, “No. Not me, bitch.”

She later explained why she decided to speak out.

“It’s pretty overwhelming and pretty scary,” Chappell said Entertainment tonight. “For someone who is very afraid of people shouting at me, the carpet is horrific and I shouted back. You have no right to shout at me like that.”

In fact, Chappell – who has been nominated for four MTV VMAs, including Best New Artist and Best Trending Video for “Hot To Go!” – isn’t afraid to hit back. Last month, she accused “demanding” fans of overstepping personal boundaries.
