Who will win the 2024 presidential race? News from surveys

Election Day is just around the corner and polls continue to show a tight race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Trump ended the weekend with a rally at Madison Square Garden that began with comedian Tony Hinchliffe mocking Puerto Rico as a “floating island of trash” and speakers at the right-wing politician’s event continued with remarks against Democrats and Harris. Meanwhile, Harris stayed true to his campaign course, reaching key swing states as early voting days dwindle and Election Day approaches.

And the race is still tough as the candidates enter the final days of the campaign.

Here’s a look at the latest polls and what’s been happening at rallies and on the campaign trail lately.

Who will win the polls for the 2024 presidential election?

The latest polls show Harris narrowly ahead in the Electoral College race, but when it comes to the popular vote, both candidates are in a dead heat.

It remains an exceptionally close race, with Harris gaining only slightly – 46% to 43% – in the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll from Oct. 16-21. The latest USA TODAY/Suffolk University national poll shows Harris with both a small lead and a large gender gap.

Women strongly supported Harris, 53% to 36%, while men overwhelmingly supported Trump, 53% to 37%. If those margins persist through Election Day, it would be the widest disparity since the gender gap emerged more than four decades ago in 1980, USA TODAY reports.

In the latest USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll, conducted Oct. 20-23, Trump and Harris are nearly tied in a key battleground state, Wisconsin, 48% to 47% among 500 likely voters. The results are within the survey’s margin of error of 4.4 percentage points.

The latest New York Times/Siena College popular vote poll, released Friday, October 25, shows Trump and Harris tied at 48% to 48%.

Harris calls on Trump to take a cognitive test

Trump commented on Harris on Truth Social earlier this month, saying, “She is slow and lethargic in answering even the simplest questions.” She responded that she would take a cognitive test and that he should do the same.

“That’s what he’s resorted to, and I think he’s actually become more and more unstable and unhinged and has resorted to name-calling because he doesn’t actually have a plan for the American people,” Harris told CBS during the campaign host Norah O’Donnell in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he agreed to an exam and called on Trump to take the same exam.

At Trump’s rally at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Sunday, speakers and the former president continued to attack Harris, a graduate of Howard University and the University of California Hastings College of Law, and her intellect, while former Fox News host Tucker Carlson Harris called. low IQ,” in his remarks on stage.

Trump, who in recent months both on and off the campaign trail has targeted Harris’ intelligence, questioned her racial identity and made other personal insults, said Sunday that she “can’t put two sentences together.”

In her Monday interview, Harris called Trump “unfit” and said people should listen not to her, but to the people who worked with him during his time in the Oval Office.

“Don’t take it from me, listen to the people who know him best,” Harris said. “His former chiefs of staff. Most recently, 4-star Marine General John Kelly. Listen to two former defense secretaries who worked for him, listen to his national security adviser, listen to his vice president, who have it all one way.” One or two said he wasn’t fit to be president again, should never be president again and is dangerous.
