Former US soccer star Hope Solo and her husband, former NFL player Jerramy Stevens, have repeatedly made headlines during their marriage of more than ten years.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist and Stevens met as student-athletes at the University of Washington and later married in 2012 – just one day after Stevens was arrested on suspicion of assaulting Solo.

In the years that followed, Stevens and Solo had two children and stood by each other even when there were legal difficulties, Solo ended his career in 2016 and the goalkeeper had to enter inpatient alcohol treatment in 2022.

Stevens was born in Idaho in 1979

Stevens was born in 1979 to Bob and Fran Stevens in Boise, Idaho, and grew up in Lacey, Washington. He attended River Ridge High School and was a star in football, basketball and track.

He played in the NFL

Stevens played football at the University of Washington and was selected by the Seattle Seahawks as a first-round pick in the 2002 NFL Draft. He remained with the team until 2007, when he was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He played in Super Bowl XL in 2006, which the Seahawks lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers, a year after becoming the team’s starting tight end.

They met for the first time in college

Both Stevens and Solo attended the University of Washington, with their studies overlapping between 1999 and 2001. They met there and dated for a time in the 2000s before not speaking for a year in 2011.

Solo told Elle In 2019, Stevens confessed his love to her over dinner that year. “I didn’t know what to say,” she explained. “So I said ‘fuck you’ and we didn’t speak for a year.”

Stevens and Solo married in November 2012

A year after the dinner where Stevens and Solo stopped speaking, the two reconciled. They dated for two months and then married on November 13, 2012.

Their wedding was not without controversy, however, as Stevens was arrested the day before the ceremony on suspicion of assaulting Solo, but there was not enough evidence to charge him. According to court documents, Stevens and Solo argued about whether they should get married in Florida or Washington state.

In January 2013, Solo said at a press conference: “It’s been a crazy year, as always – the story of my life – but it’s been a great year. Right now, I’m happier than I’ve ever been in my personal life. I’m happily married. Yes, there have been a lot of ups and downs, but that’s what makes us strong: we’re getting through them all.”

He supported Solo despite controversy

Aside from their pre-wedding domestic dispute, Solo and Stevens have run into trouble. In June 2014, the professional soccer player was charged with domestic violence after she was arrested for allegedly hitting her sister and nephew during a family gathering.

Solo pleaded not guilty but publicly apologized for the incident, writing on Facebook: “I would like to apologize to my fans, teammates, coaches, marketing partners and the entire US Soccer and Seattle Reign FC community for my involvement in a highly unfortunate incident this past weekend.”

The case was later dismissed in January 2015 after the victims and witnesses in the case refused to cooperate. Later that month, Stevens was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in California. According to the Los Angeles TimesHe pleaded guilty to drunk driving charges and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and four years probation.

In 2016, Solo was suspended by the U.S. Soccer Federation and forced to resign after making negative comments about the Swedish women’s soccer team. The couple were living in Seattle at the time – where Solo played for the Seattle Reign – and decided to travel cross-country in an RV to North Carolina, where they lived for a year.

The couple announced in December 2019 that they were expecting twins, and on March 4, 2020, son Vittorio Genghis and daughter Lozen Orianna Judith were born. Solo announced the births on Instagram with photos of Vittorio and Lozen side by side. Two years earlier, Solo had suffered a miscarriage, also with twins.

In March 2021, she celebrated the couple’s first birthday with a few family photos and said: “Two days ago we celebrated Lozen and Vittorio’s first birthday! … We feel the love, they feel the love and every day has been as exhausting as it is rewarding.”

Just a few months later, Solo celebrated Father’s Day by sharing a photo of Stevens holding the children with the caption, “I could never have picked a better father to our kids. Happy Father’s Day!”
