Who is alleged Trump golf course shooter Ryan Wesley Routh?

The suspected gunman involved in what authorities described as an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump has been identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, according to multiple reports.

Few further details have been released about the individual in question who allegedly brought a scoped AK-47 rifle to the grounds near Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, but statements from local police provide some insight into the incident and the suspected shooter.

Secret Service agents confronted and shot the would-be shooter after noticing the barrel of a rifle sticking out of a nearby chain-link fence, just a hole in front of the former president as he played a game of poker with real estate developer Steve Witkoff on Sunday afternoon.

He was about 90 to 150 meters away from Trump, authorities said at a press conference after the incident.

Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office/Handout

A witness told Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office investigators that they then saw a man jump out of the bushes and drive away in a black Nissan. The witness was even able to take a photo of the car, which helped authorities track down the suspect.

The Nissan was eventually stopped by officers in neighboring Martin County after a license plate reader detected a hit on the vehicle while driving on I-95.

Martin County Sheriff William D. Snyder told Local10 News that the driver was “relatively calm” and “did not show any great emotion.”

At a press conference Sunday afternoon, Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said investigators found an AK-47 rifle with a scope, two backpacks filled with ceramic tiles and a GoPro camera hanging from a nearby fence.

Bradshaw said the potential shooter was “looking to film the incident” using the camera attached to the fence.
