When to look for the brightest moon of the year over Los Angeles – NBC Los Angeles

Early risers will have the best view of the brightest moon of the year when it shines over Southern California this week.

The highly anticipated October supermoon, also called the Hunter’s Moon, will travel up to 222,055 miles from Earth, the closest position in 2024.

The moon will appear on the horizon just before 6 p.m. PT on Wednesday. The best time to see its spectacular glow, depending on cloud cover, is around 4:26 a.m. PT on Thursday.

A deep ocean layer could obstruct the moon early Thursday.

“We have an even deeper layer of ocean,” said NBCLA forecaster Belen De Leon. “It will be cloudy for everyone.”

This will be the third of four supermoons in a row. As the full moon following the Harvest Moon in September, this will be the Hunter’s Moon.

According to NASA, the earliest written user of the term “Hunter’s Moon” identified in the Oxford English Dictionary dates back to 1710. The Farmer’s Almanac notes that autumn, with falling leaves, fattened wildlife and harvested fields, is the time for hunting.

A supermoon usually appears larger and brighter than a normal full moon. This full moon may appear larger and take on an orange hue as it moves across the horizon around sunset.
