When is trick or treating in Memphis?

play

This year, Halloween takes place six days before the presidential election. So the season is pretty scary.

But one thing trick-or-treaters and their guardians probably don’t have to worry about is the weather.

Previous forecasts had called for rain on October 31 – a forecast that would dampen the spirits of any costumed ghost or ghoul. But meteorological forecasters now predict that any Halloween precipitation will likely occur throughout the day and have subsided by late afternoon.

“There’s a chance it will rain, but it’s very doubtful,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Andy Sniezak.

Sniezak said a front of cooler air is expected to move into the region this weekend, but October’s above-average temperatures will likely return at some point. The warmth should be pleasant, however: Late afternoon to early evening temperatures on October 31 will likely be in the upper to lower 70s. (The normal Memphis high for Oct. 31 is 69, the normal low is 48, according to the weather service.)

The mild weather will hopefully encourage gentle behavior consistent with the relatively laissez-faire attitude of Memphis and other Mid-South communities when it comes to Halloween, which remains tolerated and unregulated.

Although some neighborhoods controlled by homeowners associations set specific trick-or-treating times, the city of Memphis, as usual, has not set rules for the Oct. 31 tradition, in which most costumed children (and their adult guardians, if applicable) slam The sidewalk is cleared in the late afternoon and the streets are cleared about an hour or two after sunset (which this year is scheduled for 6:06 p.m.).

However, Memphis has a curfew that applies every day of the year. The regulation stipulates that minors under 16 years of age are not allowed to be on the streets between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. on weekdays and between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
