Longtime Nashville reporter and anchor Amy Watson is retiring. The NewsChannel 5 veteran announced on social media that she will be retiring on Friday, Oct. 25, after nearly 30 years in journalism.

Watson initially shared the news of her retirement in August, responding to a Facebook user who asked if she had “ever worked.” Watson replied that she had been caring for her mother, who was battling dementia.

On September 28, she shared the news of her mother’s death.

“I will always feel her near me,” she wrote on Facebook. “She is at peace and I take comfort in knowing that she is healed and whole again.”

Here’s what you should know about Watson and her celebrated career.

Who is Amy Watson?

Originally from Kentucky, Watson is a decorated reporter who has received numerous awards throughout her career, including seven Emmy Awards and Associated Press Awards for news writing and special projects, according to her NewsChannel 5 biography.

In addition to her work as a presenter and reporter, she is also the author of two children’s books.

As the Tennessean reports, Watson has been with the Nashville television station for nearly 20 years. She previously worked in Chattanooga, Missouri and Kentucky.

Why is Amy Watson leaving NewsChannel 5?

Watson announced that she would be retiring to care for her mother, as she was her primary caregiver.

“Because of her decline in dementia, I am retiring. I already tried to retire but they set my date for October,” Watson wrote. “I do it because I honor my mother. I will use every day I need to help her at the end of her life.”

On Facebook, Watson said her mother had previously been in a hospital emergency room due to unresponsiveness and was sleeping in a chair in the hospital room next to her mother.
