What to watch this weekend on August 16, 2024: Film awards contenders

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” was a minor disappointment with critics and at the box office when it was released at the height of the spring box office slump, but this week’s top film candidate on streaming cannot be completely ruled out in the running for awards. After all, it is the prequel to “Fury Road,” which won six Oscars in 2016 for costume and production design, sound editing and mixing, film editing, and makeup and hairstyling. Many of the award-winning artists returned for Furiosa, and there’s a good chance some of them will be nominated again. “Furiosa” probably won’t get a Best Picture nomination like “Fury Road,” but that’s a more likely outcome for a “Mad Max” film anyway.

“Furiosa” tells the origin story of the title character in the post-apocalyptic desert of the screenwriter and director George Miller‘s creation, with Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the role of Charlize Theron. She wants revenge on Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), the brash warlord who killed her mother. The film is now streaming on Max.

Here are some other movies you can stream this weekend:

“Immaculate”: Sydney Sweeney Stars in this horror film range from Neon to the Smiths to A24’s Cure. The Emmy-nominated “Euphoria” star plays a nun who becomes pregnant seemingly immaculately, and her order treats her like she’s the new Mary, carrying the returned Messiah. You can probably guess that something much more sinister is going on. The film tackles themes of women’s bodily autonomy in the style of “Rosemary’s Baby,” and Sweeney delivers one of her best performances yet.

“The Union”: The stars of Netflix’s latest spy action comedy Mark Wahlberg as a normal guy from New Jersey who is recruited by his high school ex-girlfriend, a spy played by Halle Berryinto a world full of international intrigue. The cast includes two Oscar winners – Berry and JK Simmonswho plays Wahlberg and Berry’s carer – as well as Jackie Earle-Haley, Michael ColterAnd Lorraine Bracco. The film won’t win any awards, but it could be above average for a Netflix action comedy.

“Jackpot!”: Is there really such a high demand for action comedies among viewers, or do the people in charge of the streaming services just think that they exist? In any case, they make a lot of them, like this one, which is now running on Prime Video. In a kind of allusion to “The Purge” and “John Wick 3” Subscribe plays the winner of a new kind of lottery in near-future Los Angeles. Everyone knows she has won, and if someone with a losing ticket manages to kill her – legally – before sunset, they will get their prize. So John Cenaa “lottery protection agent” steps in to help her survive. Paul Feig leads.
