What Ryan Silverfield said after Memphis football lost to UTSA

SAN ANTONIO – Memphis football coach Ryan Silverfield didn’t mince his words after Saturday’s loss to UTSA at the Alamodome.

The Tigers (7-2, 3-2 AAC) not only lost 44-36, but more importantly lost their chance to make the College Football Playoff.

“Always put it on me,” Silverfield said in his postgame press conference. “And when you write your articles, blame it on me. But obviously we weren’t ready. I blame everyone. And everyone needs to understand that we are in a results business and need to do a better job.

“Offense, defense, special teams, not good enough. Not at all. And so ultimately I have to look and say, ‘Okay, what do we need to do differently?’ Because we didn’t play like we could, but that’s not what good teams do. Good teams go out and perform at a high level. I know that’s what we would all like, but we also didn’t want it.

The Tigers were tied with the Roadrunners at halftime, but couldn’t get anything going offensively in the second half until the game was out of reach.

Memphis still has three games left this season, although the Tigers’ offseason goals are almost certainly no longer achievable. And they’re coming off a short week, facing Rice on Friday at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.

Silverfield said it’s “BS” for people to think the season is over.

“I talked about, ‘You should be frustrated. And if not, I don’t want you to participate in this program. I don’t care who you are,” he said. “I am responsible for around 200 people. And if anyone is not convinced and not discouraged…”

“There’s a big difference between, ‘Hey, screw it, the year is over, I can’t make the playoffs… BS. Because of my dead body. We’ll keep fighting, we’ll keep swinging and.’ I want to see the pain in her eyes. I want to see who will show up tomorrow with the right attitude.
