What is the best-case scenario for the 2024 Texas Tech football season?

play

Every season begins with hopeful optimism, and that will be the case for the Texas Tech football team this time too.

But what would the near-perfect, ideal, best-case scenario season look like for the Red Raiders in Joey McGuire’s third year as head coach? It’s complex, but also a bit obvious.

Here’s a look at how the Texas Tech team could reach its highest level in decades this year.

Behren Morton survives the entire season healthy for Texas Tech Football

Outside of training camp, the focus has been on Behren Morton, who is back to his old self. Morton suffered a shoulder injury last year before he even took over as starting quarterback and was never really able to show his full potential. The hope is that he can be that guy this year and get through the entire season unscathed.

Tahj Brooks sets all-time rushing record

Even with a healthy Morton, the Red Raiders are determined to play a more balanced offense. Last year, Tahj Brooks almost automatically became the offensive catalyst. Now that it’s known he can carry a very heavy load, Tech has made it clear they want to get Brooks the 1,168 yards he needs to break Byron Hanspard’s career rushing record. Brooks ran for 1,538 yards last season, so it’s possible he can match the record this season without as much pressure.

Receiving options make Texas Tech’s offense a juggernaut

Transfers Josh Kelly and Caleb Douglas, returning guard Coy Eakin and five-star freshman Micah Hudson — as well as Drae McCray and Jordan Brown — give Texas Tech plenty of weapons on the outside. And that’s not even counting tight ends Jalin Conyers, Mason Tharp and Johncarlos Miller, all of whom could have long pro careers ahead of them. That’s a lot of mouths that could weaken opposing defenses as they try to control everyone, including Brooks, out of the backfield.

New faces in defense appear early

Depth was the watchword for pretty much every defensive position during preseason practice. This type of interchangeable roster makes up for the lack of experienced names that have graduated. An injury here or there won’t hurt the team, as there are two or three more players ready to fill the void without interruption.

Fast start leads to appearance at the Big 12 Championship

Five of Texas Tech’s first seven games are at home. In six of those seven games, Texas Tech should be the clear favorite. It’s entirely possible that Tech is 6-1, ranked No. 1 in both national polls, and already bowl eligible by Halloween. And if that’s the start of the season, no one can predict how much momentum that can create for the second half of the season, even with the much more challenging schedule toward the end of the year. A fourth consecutive bowl game for the first time since the Mike Leach era should be a sure thing. Could the Red Raiders contend for a Big 12 Championship appearance? Maybe even the College Football Playoff?
