Monday, October 14, marks the federal holiday of Columbus Day, a holiday that many states and cities now recognize as Indigenous Peoples Day and Italian Heritage Day.

New York City has recognized the day as Italian Heritage Day and Indigenous Peoples Day since 2021 – much to the chagrin of a small group of city council members who make up the Italian Caucus, who have stated that they will continue to refer to the day as Columbus Day .

Here is a list of what will be open and closed:

US Postal Service

Due to the holiday, the US Postal Service will be closed on Monday. Mail is also not delivered because the postmen have the day off.

Government buildings and services

All state and city government offices in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut will be closed, including state and city courts, social security offices and other departments.

There will be no trash and recycling collection in New York City.

Libraries are also expected to be closed across the tri-state area, such as the Newark Public Library in New Jersey’s largest city. The New York Public Library is also closed on Monday.

Schools

All public schools in New York City are closed for the holidays. Parking is permitted in school zones during school holidays, however certain schools may be open, which would mean parking restrictions remain in force.

Across the rest of the Tri-State, many school districts will remain closed on this day, but the decision may vary by location. So check the district website to see which schools are open or closed.

DMV

Department of Motor Vehicle locations for New York, New Jersey and Connecticut will remain closed Monday due to the holiday, as noted on their respective websites.

Starbucks, Target and more

Most retailers, grocery stores and restaurants will be open during regular hours. But just to be sure, it’s not a bad idea to call ahead or check hours online before heading out.

Amazon

According to its website, Columbus Day is not one of the seven paid holidays that Amazon gives its employees. Therefore, services are generally uninterrupted on Columbus Day, including shipping.
