What did Jalen Ramsey say about Josh Allen? The Dolphins CB’s “bad” comments about Bills QB again

There is probably no one who had to take back his words about Josh Allen more than Jalen Ramsey.

The Bills and Dolphins will play the first game of Week 2 as the two AFC East foes meet for a Thursday Night Football showdown at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Allen and the Bills offense will look to gain momentum against a strong Dolphins defense headlined by Ramsey.

One of the most intriguing stories of the game may be how Ramsey and the Dolphins secondary can contain Allen’s strong arm, but if history has shown football fans anything, it’s that Allen has Ramsey under control.

The Bills quarterback has a perfect 5-0 record against Ramsey’s clubs, including one win over the cornerback when he was with the Jaguars, two wins when he was with the Rams, and two wins over Ramsey’s Dolphins last year.

Not only have Allen’s teams come out on top in every game, but the quarterback has also torn apart the seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback. Ramsey had to walk back his harsh words from 2018 when he criticized Allen before he had even played a single snap in the NFL.

What criticism did Ramsey have of Allen? The Sporting News explains.

What did Jalen Ramsey say about Josh Allen?

Before Allen made the jump to the NFL, Ramsey gave his opinion on the Wyoming product. It’s safe to say the star cornerback didn’t see what Buffalo saw when they selected the quarterback with the No. 7 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

“I think (Josh) Allen is garbage,” Ramsey said in a 2018 interview with GQ. “I don’t care what people say. He’s garbage. And that will show. To me, that’s a stupid draft pick. We’re playing against them this year and I’m so excited. I hope he’s their starting quarterback.”

“He played at Wyoming. Every time they played a big school — like Iowa State, which I don’t think is a big school because I went to Florida State — he would throw five interceptions and they would lose by a couple of touchdowns or something. He never beat a big school. If you look at his games against big schools, there were always a lot of interceptions and a lot of turnovers.

“It’s like saying, ‘If you’re so good, why can’t you do better?’ He fits that mold, he’s a big, tall quarterback. Supposedly with a big arm. Personally, I don’t see it that way.”

Back then, Allen was still being polite, brushing off Ramsey’s comments and saying he didn’t care because the cornerback wasn’t on his team.

“It doesn’t bother me one bit,” Allen said in 2018. “I care about my teammates and what my teammates think of me.”

Ramsey’s feelings toward Allen have certainly changed after facing him in the NFL. The cornerback praised Allen’s ability to develop as a quarterback after making the jump to the pros. His most humbling moment came during the 2022 season when Allen dismantled Ramsey in a 31-10 win over the Rams.

“His development has been insane,” Ramsey said on a 2022 episode of “Straight Off the Press.” “I usually think of quarterbacks like Josh Allen who went to small schools like Wyoming, or other quarterbacks you could name. Carson Wentz came from a small school, even Big Ben (Roethlisberger) went to Miami, Ohio. Quarterbacks like that? They’re basically a project, you know what I mean? In terms of the talent they faced, I feel like they drafted based on their potential.

“Basically a project. Allen has all the intangibles, he has the size, he can run the ball, he has the strong arm. He’s like one of those projects that turned out to be the real deal. They’ve had success on that project. Sometimes you don’t see that. A guy can have a good year and then he starts to fade. Well, that project failed a little bit. They’ve had success on this one. He’s really developed. I don’t know who their coaches are, but of course he deserves credit. Whatever they’ve done, they’ve got him to the level where he’s a top-five quarterback.”

Allen may not have been fazed by the comments, but he may have used them as motivation. Either way, he proved that Ramsey was completely wrong about his comments six years ago.
