Anthony Volpe hugged his mother Isabelle in the hallway outside the Yankees’ clubhouse not long after he delivered the biggest hit of his life – and the biggest of this Yankees season.

Volpe’s grand slam in the bottom of the third period gave the Yankees an 11-4 victory over the Dodgers in Game 4, extending the World Series – and adding another milestone to the New York native’s incredible journey where he grew up New Jersey dreams of playing for the Yankees.

And his parents, Isabelle and Michael, were in the family area of ​​the stadium to watch it.

“This is so surreal,” Isabelle said Tuesday evening. “We were rooting for the Yankees before he was born. The whole thing is a journey. We took him to all these events and spent money to meet (Derek) Jeter when he was eight years old and he wouldn’t even go up to him because he was too shy. Now he’s out there doing it. It’s just…”

Not only were they there, Isabelle said Michael saw the big bang from the family section.

“My husband said he better swing on the first pitch because it was going to be a fastball,” Isabelle said. “And then ‘boom.’ We just looked at each other and then beer flew in the air and everyone hugged each other. It was chaos.”

The pitch was a slider from Daniel Hudson, but Volpe was actually looking for a fastball.

Volpe’s grandfather, also named Anthony, also witnessed the explosion.

“We needed a big win, the whole team needed it and he gave it to them,” Volpe, a senior, said. “After that, you couldn’t hear yourself think anymore.”
