West Indies vs England: Inexperienced tourists falter in first ODI | Cricket News

A new-look England side suffered an eight-wicket defeat against the West Indies in a rain-soaked first one-day international in Antigua.

The tourists slipped to 93-4 after the start, their inexperienced top class collapsed through Jayden Seales (2:22), while debutant Jordan Cox (17) and Jacob Bethell (27) were unable to continue their good starts.

Gudakesh Motie (4-41) also played a starring role as England were bowled out for a below-par score of 209 in 45.1 overs.

England stand-in captain Liam Livingstone (48) helped stabilize the innings with a calculated strike, adding 72 with Sam Curran (37), but the tourists slumped from 165-4 when Livingstone was dismissed by spinner Motie.

Initially chasing 210 for victory, the hosts got off to a stunning start as Evin Lewis (94) and Brandon King (30) shared an 81-run opening partnership – the former bringing up his 11th half-century in ODIs the point before the rain stopped playing West Indies 81-0 in 15 overs.

With a revised target of 157 from 35 overs, Lewis took his team to the brink before being dismissed by Rashid after eight sixes and five fours, leaving Keacy Carty (19-1) and Shai Hope (6-1). done the honor.

West Indies take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the second ODI also taking place in Antigua on Saturday.

Livingstone leads, but inexperienced England fail

England openers Phil Salt (18) and Will Jacks (19) started the game cautiously with a pair of 35.

Things seemed positive for England, especially when Salt pushed Matthew Forde’s (2-48) third ball of the innings through cover for four.

But a stunning catch from Alzarri Joseph, running backwards from cover, gave the West Indies the breakthrough after Salt had beaten Seales with their toes. Jack was dismissed 14 balls later, losing Seales to Motie in the middle.

Cox and Bethell made good starts but failed due to disappointing shots, with the former releasing a slower ball to Carty in the deep third and the latter catching in extra cover, both ahead of Forde.

Livingstone enlivened England’s innings with two sixes and was given an extra life after Shimron Hetmyer dropped him on the 44th, but he failed to capitalize on the opportunity after being caught and bowled by Motie.

Motie then struck twice in two balls, dismissing two debutants: Dan Mousley, who went down on a slog sweep, and then Jamie Overton, who went lbw on the sweep. Curran became Motie’s fourth victim after being caught long-haul by Hetmyer.

Adil Rashid (15) hit a couple of boundaries to take his side past 200 while Archer scored seven before pushing Joseph one past Hope.

The West Indies made quick work of it when Rashid holed out to mid-off and stranded John Turner (2 no) with 4.5 overs left.

At the start of the chase, the required run rate for the West Indies was just over four and their openers maximized the powerplay to 46-0.

Lewis managed to hit five sixes and a boundary while taking on the English bowlers and reached 2,000 runs in ODI cricket.

King hit three boundaries in his stuttering 42-ball knock and survived an England review after being hit by Rashid’s googly. Ball tracking showed the impact occurred outside the off-stump before rain caused a pause in play.

England secured the wicket of King after he sent Livingstone deep square leg to Jacks before Rashid picked up the valuable scalp of Lewis.

Livingstone: England didn’t adapt well

England captain Liam Livingstone at the presentation:

“I think it’s just the rhythm of 50-over cricket. We had a few weeks off and tried to get up to speed and find that rhythm again.”

“We know someone in the top six needs to get a big result for us and unfortunately we couldn’t do that today.”

“Fifty overs is a long time. We want to put the West Indies under pressure and things will change from game to game. I don’t think we adapted well. The West Indies took wickets at regular moments.”

“Jof (Jofra Archer) looked threatening with the new ball and John Turner looks good too.”

Hope: We asked for early wickets

West Indies captain Shai Hope at the presentation:

“We always ask the opening bowlers to set the tone and get early wickets and they did that today.”

“We were much more consistent and discipline is the biggest factor for us. We just have to be as patient and disciplined as we can.”

“I’m pleased that Lewis and King are off to a good start in their batting.”
