NEW DELHI: The much-awaited first Test between India and New Zealand on M Chinnaswamy Stadium Bengaluru suffered a major setback on Wednesday as persistent rain wiped out the entire first day without any fall.
After heavy rains hit the region for more than 48 hours, game officials had no choice but to postpone the toss and ultimately cancel the day’s game altogether.
The disappointing turn of events on opening day has raised concerns about the weather’s continued influence on the game.
With more rain forecast for the coming days, the outlook for Day 2 is anything but optimistic.
AccuWeather reports a temperature of around 27°C, with a “real feel” of 31°C.
There is a significant 40 percent chance of rain, coupled with a 24 percent chance of thunderstorms later in the day, which could further complicate play.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued an “orange” warning for the city, warning of heavy rainfall and advising caution in all outdoor activities.
However, there is a glimmer of hope for cricket fans as the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has world-class drainage facilities.
If the rain eases, officials could resume play within about 45 minutes.
The Indian team is currently on top World Test Championship Standings and a 3-0 series win over New Zealand would cement their place in the final at Lord’s next June.
After a successful 2-0 win against Bangladesh in the last series, India will be looking to continue their winning streak with a full squad.
Meanwhile, New Zealand suffered a 2-0 defeat in Sri Lanka on their sub-continental tour after a failed Test against Afghanistan in Greater Noida.
