The National Weather Service is warning of dangerous heat and high humidity, with heat index peaks of up to 46 degrees Celsius for the Chicago area next week.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a heat advisory and a warning for extreme temperatures Sunday morning.

The warning and watch are in effect for Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Lake, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, La Salle, Kendall, Grundy, Livingston and Will counties. Other surrounding counties, including Chicago, are also under separate heat warnings and watches.

The warning comes into effect on Monday at 12 noon and the warning on Tuesday at 12 noon.

Heat index values of around 40 degrees are expected for Monday.

The NWS said dangerously hot conditions were possible Tuesday, with heat index values of 110 to 115 degrees.

The hot temperatures will continue until the middle of the week.

Extreme heat and humidity would significantly increase the risk of heat-related illness, especially among people who work or participate in outdoor activities, the NWS said.

Residents should monitor the latest forecasts and warnings to stay informed of the current situation.

The NWS said people should also be prepared to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, avoid the sun and check on relatives and neighbors.

Small children and pets should never be left unattended in a car under any circumstances, the NWS said. “This is especially true in warm or hot weather, when temperatures inside a car can become fatal within minutes.”

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a severe weather forecast for the Chicago area and surrounding areas for Tuesday.

“If storms develop on Monday or Tuesday, they would almost certainly be severe given the extremely hot and humid air mass expected,” the NWS said.

The NWS added that the chance of storms is 20% or less, but heat waves typically bring severe thunderstorms, so residents should keep an eye on the weather.
