Wayne Rooney stuns Gary Neville with Arne Slots point Liverpool fans will agree

Liverpool have made an impressive start to life under new manager Arne Slot and his side were the subject of debate on the latest Stick To Football podcast.

Wayne Rooney has named Liverpool as the Premier League team that has impressed him the most this season. After seven games, the Reds are currently top of the table, having won six games so far, and have adapted well to life under new coach Arne Slot.

Some observers predicted Liverpool would struggle following Jurgen Klopp’s departure, although the first team has demonstrated its ability to seamlessly adapt to Slot’s style of play. As a result, the team is expected to be locked in another title race with Arsenal and Manchester City and reckon they still have a chance in the final weeks of the season, which has already caused plenty of drama in the first two months.

Slot earned praise for picking up where Klopp left off and Rooney – who later made his name at Everton – is among those who singled out the Dutchman for his praise. When asked on The Overlap who caught his attention this season, the former Manchester United captain replied: “I would go to Liverpool.”

“I think when the coach came after Klopp there was obviously a lot of pressure and they look more solid. I think they have a good, solid base and the manager comes across well.”

Gary Neville was surprised by this answer and replied: “Liverpool?!” However, after hearing Rooney’s remark, he also had some positive things to say about the Reds’ watertight defensive unit.

“To be honest, that back five has probably played together more than any other back five in a long time, that’s what it feels like,” Neville added. “There’s (Andy) Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, (Ibrahima) Konate and (Virgil) Van Dijk. Some will say Konate hasn’t played every game, but it feels like the back five is pretty solid along with Alisson.”
