Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney was honored at the annual Legends of Football event in London this week, joining a spectacular line-up of players whose successful careers have been recognized with the award.

The former striker, who began his career at Everton before moving to Old Trafford in 2004, won five Premier League titles as well as a Champions League trophy and an FA Cup with the Red Devils.

He remains the club’s all-time top goalscorer and the only player to ever score 250 goals for United. Rooney enjoyed 13 successful years at Old Trafford before returning to his boyhood club for a short spell.

However, the current Plymouth Argyle coach received a different trophy this week as he was honored with the 2024 Legends of Football Award.

Rooney was present alongside England’s most capped player Fara Williams at a star-studded event in the country’s capital and joined the likes of Pele, David Beckham and Arsene Wenger in the Legends of Football Hall of Fame.

Their ceremony, attended by some of the biggest names in the football world, was in aid of the music charity Nordoff and Robbins, who use the power of sound to break down the barriers caused by life-limiting illnesses and disabilities.

“I’m delighted to be recognized as Legends of Football 2024,” Rooney said when asked what the award meant to him. “The award has already been presented to some of the biggest names in football. It means a lot to me to be recognized alongside all of them, including some of my teammates, opponents and football icons.”

Rooney enjoyed a successful start to the 2024/25 season with Plymouth in the Championship, seeing them rise from the relegation places to 13th in the league over the course of September.
