Georgia junior football safety Malaki Starks seemed confidently prepared to give Mississippi State his undivided attention as he spoke this week about his offense heading into Saturday’s game in Athens.

It is second to last in the SEC at 27.4 points per game and 12th out of 16 teams in total offense at 380.2 yards per game.

“Records and numbers can be deceiving,” he said of a Mississippi State team that is 1-4 with its only win in its season opener against Eastern Kentucky. “They are a really good team, very explosive and very well coached. They’ve had a bye week and I think they’ve played their best ball in the last two weeks. They’re coming in with a really good performance this week.”

Mississippi State has lost its last six SEC games, the fourth-longest conference losing streak nationally.

Georgia is 4-1, 2-1 in the SEC and is coming off a 31-13 win over Auburn at home last week.

“They’re a really, really good team,” Mississippi State safety Isaac Smith told reporters. “They will be really physically demanding. They have a really good quarterback (Carson Beck), kind of a veteran guy. I’m looking forward to the challenge and going out there and showing people that we’ve improved, especially from Texas (a 35-13 loss) to last week.”

Mississippi State has shown signs of improvement in its last two games in losses to Florida and Texas, but that’s all relative. For first-year coach Jeff Lebby, this is still a big rebuild in a program that has one of the toughest jobs in the SEC. Georgia’s running game is trending upward and will face the No. 121 run defense in the country.
