Vols set points and yardage records against Kent State

The Tennessee Volunteers football team set a number of offensive records in their 71-0 victory over Kent State on Saturday.

The Vols posted the program’s best numbers in points, yards and more against the Golden Flashes, while running back Dylan Sampson had a record-setting day.

Here are the records Tennessee has set. All records are from the modern era, which began in 1937.

Tennessee scored 37 points in the first quarter

Tennessee set a record for most points in a quarter with 37 points in the first quarter. That’s the record for most points in a quarter. The Vols scored five touchdowns and a safety to set the record. Running back Dylan Sampson scored three rushing touchdowns in the first quarter.

The previous record was 35, set by UT in the first quarter against Arkansas at Neyland Stadium on November 11, 2000.

Tennessee scored 65 points in the first half

Tennessee scored 65 points in the first half, setting a record for most points scored in a half. UT had nine touchdowns in the first half. Sampson had four.

UT’s previous record was 52 against UT Martin on October 22, 2022 at Neyland Stadium. That was also in the first half.

Tennessee scored 71 points

The Vols scored 71 points, surpassing the previous record of 70. UT had scored 70 points against Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 23, 2000. Tennessee scored two field goals in the second half, including a 21-yard kick by Max Gilbert in the fourth quarter that set the record.

The record for points in a game under coach Josh Heupel was 69, set by UT in the season opener against Chattanooga. The Vols have scored more than 60 points six times in Heupel’s four seasons.

Tennessee had a total of 740 yards

UT totaled 740 yards on offense, surpassing the previous record.

Running back Patrick Wilk ran for 12 yards to give UT a record 733 total yards. The previous record was 724 against Missouri on Nov. 12, 2022. Saturday was the fourth time in program history that UT rushed for more than 700 yards. It rushed for 718 yards against Chattanooga in the season opener and also against Troy on Nov. 3, 2012.

Tennessee scored 50 points in three consecutive games

UT scored at least 50 points in three consecutive games for the first time.

This was the first time UT has accomplished this since 1913 and only the second time in school history. The Vols have never reached the 50-point mark in four consecutive games.

Dylan Sampson ran for four touchdowns

With his four touchdowns, Sampson set the Tennessee record for rushing touchdowns in a game. He is the first player to score four rushing touchdowns in a half.

Six other players have scored four rushing TDs in a game. John Kelly was the last player to accomplish the feat, doing so on September 4, 2017 against Georgia Tech.
