Vision Zero prepares for September ‘Buckle Up Phone Down’ commitment – InForum

FARGO — The number of deaths from car crashes in North Dakota has declined in recent years, and safety experts are asking the public for help to keep that trend going.

In September, Vision Zero will launch its “Buckle Up Phone Down” campaign for the second time.

Five coordinators will visit schools, businesses and community events across the state to remind drivers of the importance of wearing their seatbelts and driving without distraction.

According to Vision Zero, 69% of fatal car crashes in 2022 were caused by drivers not wearing seat belts. That number dropped to 48% in 2023.

Encouraging people to wear seatbelts and avoid distracted driving can prevent more deaths on North Dakota’s roads, said Lauren Wahlman, information manager for the North Dakota Department of Transportation’s safety program.

“It’s about your families, it’s about your friends. We say zero deaths because we mean it. Because zero is really the only acceptable number when it comes to your family and friends,” Wahlman said.

North Dakota will also have additional patrols in September to enforce the state’s distracted driving laws.

The fine for distracted driving can range from $20 to $100.
