Virginia voters are rushing to check registration status as Election Day approaches

With early voting ending this weekend and Election Day on Nov. 5 fast approaching, 7News is polling voters heading to the polls.

“First I had to check my status,” said Virginia voter Ibrahim Kamara. “I got calls from everyone to make sure I was registered.”

Registration status can be confirmed with a quick online check, which also shows your early voting location and polling place for Election Day.

On Friday evening, there was still a steady flow of early voters at the McLean Governmental Center, where Greeshma Achar voted early.

“I think we consider ourselves to be informed voters,” Achar said. “So do a little research, just know what we need to do and then just come here and do it.”

With recent headlines about voter purging in Virginia, most voters who spoke to 7News said they did everything they could to make sure they were able to cast their vote without any issues.

“When I showed my driver’s license, I wondered if I would be blacklisted,” said Pradeep Balebail. “Just a little scared. That’s all.”

While the approximately 1,600 people removed from voter rolls in a recent purge represent only a small portion of potential voters, the Fairfax County Board of Elections reminds residents that Virginia allows same-day registration.

As of Friday, they said they had 2,364 people registered on the same day.

To register to vote on Saturday, Nov. 2, residents can visit an early voting site from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Same-day registration is also available at polling stations on Election Day from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m

Election officials said there will be two trained specialists at each site.

Same-day registered voters must cast a provisional ballot and fill out a provisional ballot envelope with a Social Security number, name, address and contact information.

The ballot will then be verified and counted once citizenship status is confirmed.
