WASHINGTON (7News) — Gerry Connolly, the Democratic U.S. Representative for Virginia’s 11th District, said Thursday morning that he is undergoing treatment for esophageal cancer, or “esophageal cancer.”

Connolly shared news of his diagnosis and treatment on social media, saying he had not experienced any symptoms other than occasional stomach pains. The announcement also comes after Connolly secured another term.

“Cancer can be hard. But so am I,” Rep. Connolly wrote in his statement. “I will attack this the only way I know how – with Irish fighting and humor.”

Connolly said he plans to continue his duties on Capitol Hill during the process, which includes his roles on the Foreign Affairs and Oversight committees.

Connolly’s district largely includes Fairfax County.

A few days ago I learned that I had joined the ranks of millions of Americans. I have esophageal cancer. It was a surprise because I had no symptoms other than a few intermittent stomach aches. I will undergo chemotherapy and immunotherapy immediately. Cancer can be hard. But that’s me too. I’m going to attack this the only way I know how – with Irish fighting and humor.

With a great team of doctors, nurses and medical technicians, we are very confident that the outcome will be successful.
