Virat Kohli disappoints on return to home match; Rohit Sharma’s reaction says it all – Watch

Virat Kohli failed to impress on his return to home Test play as he was dismissed for just 6 on Day 1 of the first Test match between India and Bangladesh in Chennai on Thursday. This was Virat’s first Test match on Indian soil since March 2023, and he received thunderous applause when he came out to bat at the M Chidambaram Stadium. However, he played a loose shot outside the off-stump that gave Hasan Mahmud his third wicket of the match. The delivery flew past Virat’s outside edge, and wicket-keeper Litton Das made no mistake, completing the catch behind the stump. Rohit was visibly dismayed at the development, with India losing three wickets early in the first session.

Earlier, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto had won the coin toss and decided to bowl.

“I would like to bowl first. There is moisture on the wicket and we want to take advantage of that. The pitch looks hard and there is moisture there. The first session will be very good for the seamers. The way we played this series (against Pakistan), we are confident. This is a new series, we have to follow our processes. It is a good mix of experience and youth. We will go with three seamers and two spin all-rounders,” Shanto said.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma said they would have bowled even if he had won the coin toss.

“I would have done that too (to bowl first). The pitch is a bit soft. Conditions will be challenging. We have prepared well, so we should play to our potential and play the way we know how. If you look at the 10 Test matches, every game is important. But we want to focus on what is ahead. We came here a week ago and prepared well for this game. We are feeling confident. Three seamers and two spinners – Bumrah, Akash Deep, Siraj, Ashwin and Jadeja,” Rohit said.

Bangladesh (Playing XI): Shadman Islam, Zakir Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das (wk), Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Nahid Rana.

India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj.
